Does Rainfall Damage Cars?

2019 has been one of the rainiest years Arizona has seen in some time. When enjoying the holidays, bundling up and spending time with the family, we welcome the added rainfall, but what does all of this wet weather mean for our vehicles?

Rainy Weather & Your Cars

Fortunately, rainwater isn’t terribly hard on vehicles. You may lose some shine on your car over time if we keep seeing these weeklong rains, yet the real reason people tend to view any damage or wear on their vehicles from rain is not the rain itself, but the dirt, dust, and debris that can be left on cars post-rain. For this reason, it’s essential to wash your car post rainfall. When we see sunshine back in the forecast, you can take it to your favorite car wash and ask for a good wax job or consider using an all-season car cover like this one from Autsop. If you plan on moving somewhere that sees more rain or snow than the likes of Phoenix, than a protective paint could also be an excellent solution to feel at ease with your car’s paint job not getting damaged.

What About Acid Rain?

No, acid rain isn’t acid falling from the sky, the way they depict it in the movies. It is rainfall mixed with gases and elements from the atmosphere that has caused a change in pH levels of the moisture. Acid rain is usually around 4 to 5.5 on the pH scale, whereas pure water is roughly a 7. Rainfall is commonly around 6 in pH, so it is, in actuality, usually a bit acidic. The reason for this is acid rain is caused by contaminants in the air collected by rainfall, which can do damage to vehicles, and buildings, if left to wear. Acid rain is a problem in other areas, in places like southeastern Canada. But since our rain still has particulates and is only slightly acidic, we suggest wiping down your vehicle post-rain and getting it washed with wax after a harsh rainfall. The rain spots are usually filled with contaminants that can make even the shiniest of cars lose shine over time.
