Take Your Bae to the Drive-in Movies This Month!

Jan2third.jpg

The Valley has one of only 330 drive-in movie theaters left in the country. Since it’s warm enough, and since February is the month of romance and Valentine's Day, why not take your bae to the drive-in movies?

Just south of Bethany Home Rd. on 55th Ave in Glendale, the West Wind Glendale 9 features specials, double features, and family nights. The property is in the shape of a stop sign, with nine beautiful screens. They claim to be the largest drive-in movie theater in the Western U.S. and are open every day of the year.

Admission:

Adults: $7.50 or $5.25 on Tuesdays (Family Fun Nights)
Children 5-11: $1.25
Children 4 and under: free

Some tips to make your movie night a better experience

  • Wash the windows of your car. Even if you intend to sit outside, you may change your mind.
  • Clean the inside of your car and provide plenty of comforts, such as cup holders and tissues.
  • Bring some snacks, fast food, or eat before the show. The snack bar prices aren’t too bad, but a little pricey to buy a full meal. If you’re going to see a double feature, you’ll get hungry, and popcorn, even with a free refill, probably won’t be enough to eat.
  • Pack up your lawn chairs, blankets, and cooler, or watch from the comfort of your car and let the kids fall asleep in the backseat in heir pajamas!

Sound

The movie sound quality is crystal clear and comes from a station on your car’s FM radio dial. You can dial your car radio to the FM channel and keep the car on ‘accessory’ mode, bring a battery-powered radio boom box or get the FM app and listen from your cell phone. If you’re in your car, you don’t have to worry about talking during the movie, or listening to anyone’s crying baby.

Oh, and there is a complimentary jump start if your battery dies, too.

Screens

The screen viewing is great, both in terms of quality and in terms of being able to get a parking place where you can see the screen well.

Amenities

There is a playground for the kids, a snack bar, and bathrooms. The lowdown on the concessions is that they aren’t ‘too’ pricey (free refill on the popcorn) and yes, there is a bathroom. The complaint? Patrons tend to be messy in the restrooms and not clean up after themselves.

What is not allowed

Firearms and weapons are not allowed
Pets except for service animals should be left at home.
Trying to sneak someone in by hiding them in your trunk. Your whole car will get kicked out if you get caught.
Grills and fires are not allowed
Screen switching is not allowed (watching the first movie on one screen and then moving to watch a different second feature on another screen.)
Alcoholic beverages are prohibited

Gift Certificates

While you can purchase gift certificates online in increments of $5,  it will cost you an additional $2.75 to have them mailed to the recipient through the US postal service, so if you plan on doing this, please give them plenty of time to get there. You can also have them express mailed or overnight delivery, which is quite a bit pricier.

Note that gift certificates do not guarantee admittance, as entry is strictly on a first come, first served basis.

Swap Meet

Saturdays and Sundays from 5 AM to 3 PM, the grounds are used for a swap meet. Saturday admission is 75 cents and Sunday admission is $1.25.
